The Benefits of Small Cap Investments
Many traders play it safe by sticking to conservative investments in large cap companies rather than put their money into small cap investments. Large cap companies generally have market capitalizations of more than $2 billion. They are usually well-established companies that have been around for a long time and have proven their reliability as solid investments that will provide steady, if modest, returns.
Small cap investments, on the other hand, are companies with market capitalizations somewhere between a few hundred million dollars and $2 billion. They should not be confused with penny stocks, which are much riskier investments. Small cap investments are found on all the major stock exchanges. They are classified as small cap simply because the total value of their stocks is not as high as large cap stocks.
Though they are small, these investments can be very profitable. Due to their small size, a trader can purchase many more individual stocks than he normally would when buying large cap stocks. When the value of these stocks begins to trend upward, the results for your portfolio have much more impact. Owning 10,000 shares of a stock rather than 1,000 allows you to reap the benefits of price spikes.
You are also free of much of the competition from institutional traders when you trade in small caps. Large firms cannot trade in small caps for regulatory reasons that essentially prohibit the practice. These stocks are the perfect prey for the independent trader.

If you want to make small cap investments, you do not need to do anything special. They are available on all the exchanges. You will simply need to check small cap indexes you want to identify specific small cap investments by name.
