An income fund is a type of mutual fund. The goal of such a fund is to generate income for investors rather than focus on capital appreciation. The typical income fund will hold a wide range of bonds as well as dividend paying stocks.
The share price of income funds is not necessarily very stable. However, this is of little concern to most shareholders involved in the fund. Their primary interest is in the regular payments that the fund will issue. In the turbulence of today’s market, many investors are turning to income funds as sources of relief. They want to get what they can out of their investments while they may.
If the idea of an income fund sounds attractive to you, peruse the following list. These funds are particularly popular this year.
• Guggenheim Strategic Opportunities — A traditional closed-end fund that is noted for the diversity of its investments.
• T Rowe Price Retirement 2015 — They intend to maintain 55% of the investment in stocks and only a little more than 40% in bonds.
• Vanguard Star Fund — Their emphasis is on stocks issued by large domestic companies.
• Intrepid Capital Investor — This fund focuses its investments in small and mid-cap companies with less than $10 billion in market capitalization.
• Calamos Growth and Income A — This fund holds many securities with terms to maturity ranging between two and ten years.
• Fidelity Capital & Income — Among the more typical holdings for income funds, this fund holds a large number of defaulted securities.
• Tilson Dividend — A very popular income fund that has concentrated its investments in real estate trusts, convertible bonds and publicly traded master limited partnerships.
