What is the stock market? Many beginning investors have asked the same question. Learning about the stock market, the tools of the trade and common operations are essential to starting an investment strategy.
What Are Stocks?
Stocks are essentially the smallest unit of ownership someone can have in a company. Stocks are an investment vehicle that the company issuing the stocks and investors gain several benefits. If you purchase a stock, you own a portion of the company that issued it.
Companies issue their stocks for a variety of reasons. The main reason companies issue stocks is to raise additional money to put toward operations. Many companies use the money to improve their current line of products, hire new employees to keep up with demand and bring their facilities, such as buildings, up to date.
The stock market is an entity made up of transactions; it is not an actual place or tangible thing. Stock exchanges, or companies, manage the market by bringing together buyers and sellers. The stock market is used by companies to issue their stocks and the exchanges make the stock available to people interested in making a purchase or selling stocks they own.
There are multiple stock markets around the world. The largest market or exchange in the United States is the New York Stock Exchange, or NYSE. Many refer to the NYSE as “Wall Street.” Other markets around the globe include the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, Nigerian Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange.
So, what is the stock market? It is a method for you and many other people to invest their money and gain ownership of companies seeking to raise more funds.
