The Best Stock Market Commodities of 2011

stock market commodities

Stock market commodities refer to the stocks that reflect the current rates of real materials, such as oil, gas, precious metals, crops, and livestock.  Although there is uncertainty in every sector of the stock market, these commodities tend to maintain value with a bit more stability than other more volatile alternatives.

Top Performers of the Year

Some of the best commodity stocks of the current year so far are in the oil and gas categories. Dated Brent Crude Oil has jumped by over 18% in 2011, and 52% in the last 12 months. Indonesian Liquefied Natural Gas stock has improved by 33% this year, and 55% in the previous 12 months. Jet fuel stock was another top performer in this area of stock market commodities. Most agricultural crop stocks have been fairly stable. Cotton is a risky exception. Its value has risen by almost 80% in the last 12 months, but this year the value is down by 7%. Corn has jumped in value by a staggering 103% in 12 months, with a 17% growth in 2011. Mined commodities have done well lately, with rock phosphate at the top of the list. Its stock value has risen by 46% in 12 months, with a 17% increase this year. Gold is another wise commodity investment for this year.

How to Invest in Stock Market Commodities

When investing in stock market commodities, proper research is required. Investors should carefully study price history, noting possible causes for dramatic increasing and decreasing value, such as political or environmental interference. You cannot predict environmental disasters affecting crops, but you may be able to gauge government policies and other impacting factors that may signal a jump or drop in value. As with any stock, these stock market commodities come with risk and they should be approached cautiously.
