Easy Ways to Save Money This Summer

by

With the summer season here, you and your family are probably planning your fair share of day trips and vacations. Even with our economy’s current state, we should still be able to have fun right? Why should having fun cost hundreds? Luckily, it doesn’t have to, as there are a multitude of ways to save money and stay on top of your finances. Whether you are on-the-go, planning a trip, or just trying to budget better; there are plenty of ways you can save. You’ll also be happy to know that most of these ways to save money are simple. You can start saving today, and most can even be done right from your smartphone. I’ll even send you off with some tips you can think about trying out for long term savings, maybe you can save enough to go on an even better vacation next year!

Saving Money Made Simple

ways to save moneyRemember, these are easy ways to save. We’re not recreating the wheel here. With life already being so busy and overwhelming, why pile it on with more things to remember? By simply being more attentive each day you can easily save more money than you ever have been before. Think about it this way, are you taking advantage of sale items in grocery stores, or even making your own iced coffee in the mornings? You could even save money each week by bringing lunch instead of going out for lunch each day. By taking a few extra minutes here and there, money will start to accrue, and fast. With the extra money you could put it towards something nice for that special someone, open an interest bearing savings account, or even invest in a few stocks and possibly make some money! You don’t have to go overboard though, stick to what you know and what’s within your means.

Save Money Around Your House

A simple look around your house can even show you other ways to save. With the sporadic heatwaves getting longer more people will retreat to their air conditioned homes. A whopping 70% of your home’s summer utility use is spent through your air conditioner. Open windows instead and circulate the air through your home to cool it off. Keep a nice breeze throughout your house by opening two windows and create a cross breeze. Think logically too, if you leave a room, turn the light off. It’s simple, not rocket science. Also, minimize the amount of appliances you have on during this season’s peak hours, which usually span from 3pm to 7pm. You would be amazed at how much you can save just by being more attentive!

Make That Smartphone Pay For Itself

That smartphone sitting in your pocket now is serving you no good just loaded up with Angry Birds or YouTube. Sure, you use it to stay connected to emails or dare I say, call or talk to someone, but are you saving with it? As smartphones emerged so did apps. Apps of all sorts and all kinds to not only entertain you but also to help you. There are plenty of apps, for both Android and iPhone alike that can help you not only save money, but also stay on top of your finances and bills.

Here’s how:Mobile Banking On Smartphone

Banking and Credit Card Apps: Truth be told, almost every bank and credit card company out there has a smartphone app. For those of you with accounts at Wells Fargo, Bank of America, or TD Bank these banking apps allow you to access your account information from wherever you are. Monitor your purchases, transfer money between your accounts, and some even let you set automatic bill payments or deposit checks by taking a quick picture. Use these types of apps to stay on top of your bills, take advantage of exclusive incentives and budget your spending.

Phone Service Apps: Apps like these are good to monitor your usage and to pay your bill. You can make sure you are staying within your plans allowances to avoid expensive fees and also automatically set payments to sync with your banking accounts. Verizon’s app actually came in handy for me recently, when I was looking at my usage report. I noticed I was paying for a personal hotspot but wasn’t really using it in addition to using half the amount of data I was actually paying for. By downgrading my data plan and dropping my personal hotspot I saved myself about thirty five dollars each month. That’s over $400 a year!

Deals and Savings Apps: There are so many deals apps to choose from it can become a little overwhelming. They can definitely help you save though, as many retailers and businesses are trying them out as a new trend in marketing. Most deal apps even offer exclusive incentives or points-based rewards. They can be fun, but you need to know what you are looking for.

Rather than downloading every one that will fit on your phone, try a couple of the top ones first to see if they have a decent selection of deals around you. A deals app will not do you any good if they are focused on the Chicago area and you live in New York. Another way to find great deals apps you’re always guaranteed to use is to keep an eye out when you are out shopping or walking around town. Stores apart of deal apps will usually have some sort of marketing material to show they are apart of that specific deal network.

Locator Apps: Locator apps work on a lot of different levels. They also serve many purposes. One type of locator app I am talking about is a business based app. This includes check-in giants like Yelp and Foursquare or even money saving geniuses like GasBuddy, who simply shows you gas rates around you from lowest to highest. You would not believe how many times I’ve gotten more gas at a cheaper price by using that app. There are also locator apps that show you where certain resources are, like Wi-Fi hotspots. These resources can definitely help save you some money wherever you go whether you are saving a few cents on each gallon of gas or avoid expensive fees going over your data plans.

Scanning barcodePrice Comparing Apps: These apps are some of my favorite ones to use, as it makes shopping fun even if you are on a budget. I have one friend who is a professional price comparer. We will walk into stores and open up RedLaser, one of the best free ones available. Besides also being a QR scanner, RedLaser will scan barcodes and show you other businesses around you selling the same product and how much they are charging. You would be surprised how many times my friend or myself have saved money showing store clerks who wind up price matching the product, or just by going to the cheaper business. Most of the times savings ranged anywhere from a few dollars all the way up to $20 less!

How You Can Start Saving Today

Today, there are so many more opportunities to save. Unlike our coupon clipping past generations, we have a slew of resources available to help us save money on almost anything and everything. Besides smartphone apps, there are plenty of other resources available right at your fingertips. You just have to know how to look. Here’s your map to finding those hidden treasures!

Coupon Websites: Whenever you find yourself making an online purchase (which can sometimes wind up to actually be cheaper than buying in-store), head over to RetailMeNot.com to run a quick search. You can see if you are able to find any offers for what you are buying, or browse through the deals featured on their site. It can always be a good idea to sign up for their mailing lists, as newsletter updates usually show you their latest deals. If you find it to be too “spammy” for your liking, you could always opt-out. There are plenty of other sites just like RetailMeNot.com, a simple web search for “Coupon sites” will give you results for online stores and retail locations.Deal Websites: Deal apps got the idea from somewhere, and there are plenty of deal sites out there to garner inspiration from. Sites like Woot.com, Newegg.com, Slickdeals.net, and Fatwallet.com are always running ridiculous deals on an assortment of items. From laptops and electronics to cookware, clothing, and spa days there are savings on almost anything you can think of. While these websites may not fit into everyday living (as you should be spending less, budgeting more), the times when you are looking for a certain product or item these sites are priceless. They are all definitely worth a visit when you are looking to spend some money.

Websites like Mint.com or CreditKarma.com are great to use. I am actually a member of Mint.com. Mint is a phenomenal financial planner that keeps everything in one place. I can view my bank accounts from there, see my recent purchases, and even a graph showing where all of my money goes to. You can also set goals, budgets and sync your investment platform up to Mint so you can monitor your investments as well. Did I mention its free to sign up? What are you waiting for?

Credit Cards: While credit cards do not necessarily help people spend less, using them correctly can help you improve your finances in the long term and save money. Many times, people receive a letter from a credit card company telling them they are “Pre-Approved,” so they fill out a form and next thing you know they have a credit card. This is the worst way to get one. Do some research beforehand, avoid cards with annual fees. In the right hands, a credit card can do wonders as you increase your credit score. It will help with loans and larger purchases down the road.

When researching credit cards also look into ones with cash back incentive programs. Certain credit cards from companies like Chase, Bank of America or Discover are known to offer incentives for cash back rewards that are constantly stacking up, offering you some of your money back for all that you have spent.

NOTE: Credit cards are not the only companies offering cash back incentives. Auction giants eBay offers their members eBay bucks on certain purchases. You can find other companies like eBay by running a simple search for “top cash back incentive programs.”
